We are sad to see you leave but our memories of joy, excitement, and heart ache will be ours to remember forever.

CAROL MUNRO FINE ART

We are thrilled to introduce Carol Munro, a talented Canadian artist residing in the picturesque setting of Penticton, British Columbia. Her artistry is profoundly influenced by the natural beauty and geography of the Okanagan Valley, evident in the captivating essence of her work.

Carol's artistic vision is eloquently expressed in her own words: "There is a persistent whisper of things not-quite-seen, but powerful—forces and presences which are oddly familiar at some deep animal level within us. It is this sense of cycles—of movement, recurrence and belonging that I work to record when I put my mark on the paper or the canvas."

In her studio, Carol meticulously crafts her pieces, incorporating a unique technique that involves working images into a sanded surface, resulting in a rough and distressed finish. Through a combination of image transfer, pen, pastels, encaustic, and watercolor pencil, she enriches shapes and colors, adding depth and dimension to her creations. Some pieces are further enhanced with a layer of beeswax, enhancing their translucency and creating a sense of depth and distance.

Carol's paintings are more than mere representations; they are records of places, people, and events, faded and scraped over time like cherished memories. She explores the concept that our minds preserve experiences as they occurred, maintaining their freshness and vibrancy. In Carol's words, "Wayfinding traces the evolution of these works as my art moves through to the outer limits of encaustic and beyond, into mixed media, digital art, and textiles."

Carol Munro's work is a poignant reflection of the passage of time and the beauty that resides in memory. Her art invites us to delve into the enigma of recollection, where objects and characters are eroded by the roughshod passage of time, yet their beauty endures in the vivid landscapes of our minds.

Hello and thank you Patricia, for sharing your master-piece’s with us at the Tumbleweed and giving us the opportunity to share with the local community and surrrounding as well. Your choice of subject matter and your method of applying color, spark that sublime dopamine rush, for all who gaze upon your creations.

Patricia Grace, a talented and versatile artist based in the Okanagan Valley. She creates vibrant and expressive paintings that capture the beauty and diversity of nature, using acrylic as her medium. Her style showcases stylized landscapes which incorporates elements of texture, collage, and symbolism into her compositions. Her paintings reflect her passion for the environment, spirituality, and personal growth, and invite the viewer to explore their own connection to the world and more.

Family day weekend is full of things to do!

We would like to reminder everyone of the following.

Free Family Day Community Canvas Event

The Penticton Art Gallery and the Penticton & District Community Arts Council are excited to announce its upcoming Family Day event, scheduled to take place on February 17th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Penticton Art Gallery.

The highlight of the event will be a collaborative canvas project, where kids and families can come together to contribute to a communal painting. This canvas, once completed, will be transformed into something special for the “Parade for No Reason” during the Ignite the Arts Festival, set to take place on March 29th at 6:30 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside two Artists in Residence (AIR) from the PDCAC, as well as local Artist Jenny Long, who will guide them through the creative process.

In addition to the canvas project, the tearoom space in the Penticton Art Gallery will host other creative activities such as rock painting and coloring pages. Refreshments and snacks will also be provided for attendees to enjoy throughout the event.

Chelsea Terry, PAG Communications Coordinator, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, "We are thrilled to offer a space where families of all kinds can come together and unleash their creativity. This event is not only about creating art but also about building connections within our community, something the missions of both PDCAC and PAG have in common.”

Thanks to a partnership and grant with BC Museums Association, funding has been secured to allocate for Artist in Residence fees, refreshments, and materials, giving the ability for the two arts organizations to present these activities for free to anyone who wishes to participate.

Attendees to the Family Day Community Canvas event are encouraged to join in the fun and return to join in the parade during Ignite the Arts.

 

Paul Butvila Fine Art

Seeds of Hope

From January 31 through March 28, 2023 Kettle Valley Memorial together with Tumbleweed Gallery will present Seeds of Hope, an exhibition of paintings by Kelowna artist, Jolene Mackie. Her first solo exhibition since the COVID shutdown, it is especially meaningful to Jolene: it is dedicated to her mother who passed away in June 2022.

 

An Emily Carr fine arts graduate, Jolene is a recipient of the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan Visual Arts Award. Her work is widely exhibited throughout the Okanagan Valley and British Columbia. Aside from paintings on the usual canvas or board, Mackie’s murals can be seen on the walls of the administration building at Naramata Centre, at the Vernon City parkade, on the ceiling of the Kelowna CMHA and at the BC Children’s Hospital Teck Acute Care Centre in Vancouver.

 

“My paintings (are) a vessel for my feelings and how I process and understand the world. My creative practice is deeply rooted in my mortality…I am this being, this lump of flesh - that has consciousness! And yet this body is so temporary. Everything is so ephemeral”.

 

Jolene Mackie is known for her surreal, otherworldly scenes. Islands float serenely in outer space painted in hues that range from soft blues and greys to orange and mauve, reminiscent of an Albert Bierstadt landscape on up to a more modern palette of unabashedly brilliant jewel tones.

 

The central figure often found in her paintings is a backpack-toting robot bearing a heart on his bib: This curious little investigator… has somewhere to take me; he’s got something to show me. The robot might be sitting at the edge of an island, feet dangling in space, or walking along a magical path. Curly-cued fronds or a rainbow-coloured swirl of bejewelled geometric shapes emanate from him and flow towards the sky. Perhaps they depict the robot’s thoughts or emotions of awe or wonderment - not fear - as he stands in the midst of the unknown.

 

It was one such painting that Kevin Smith, owner of Kettle Valley Memorial purchased from Tumbleweed Gallery a few years ago. He describes the piece entitled A Moment to Ponder (see below) as “very cool - there’s this robot, roaming around in the universe - sort of like what it might be after we pass on”. The painting now hangs in the viewing room at Kettle Valley Memorial, where it gives solace to visitors grieving the loss of a loved one.

"A Christmas Carol" on December 11th

After two years the Children's Showcase finally announces their 39th season return to the stage. They are excited to feature two spectacular and not to be missed shows at the Penticton Cleland Community Theater. Dufflebag Theatre "A Christmas Carol" on December 11th with a show that boasts an exciting, interactive and unique experience for all who attend. Three Hat's Circus February 19th which will entertain and inspire guests with their amazing Circus skills and a message of co-operation and believing in yourself! Tickets are $16.29 or two shows for $26.74 and can be purchased through Evenbrite or at the door. 

 

Over thirty years ago a group of parents met and created something wonderful for their kids and their kidsʼ friends. They decided to bring live, professional, family entertainment to Penticton. That was the beginning of Childrenʼs Showcase. Today it is still going strong, making it the longest-running childrenʼs entertainment series in British Columbia!

LINDA LOVISA: FEATURED LIVE JULY 22, 2022

“Visit us at the Tumbleweed Gallery and have a conversation with Linda, while showcasing live creation of her art”.

Kelowna artist Linda Lovisa paints Alla Prima. (direct approach) This type of painting keeps the colors fresh and vibrant while mixing direct on the canvas. Her techniques include Impressionism, symbolism and abstraction. Although she works primarily in acrylic, she continues to explore a wide range of media including pastel, mixed media and watercolor.
Linda’s paintings have appeared in exhibits across Canada and the United States and can be found in private and public collections nationally and internationally. Linda has been presented by The Federation of Canadian Artists, a Gold Award and an Award of Excellence.

Anne-Marie’s ability to paint people as well as landscapes won her success in the competition for cover artist and illustrator for the Advocate, the law magazine for B.C. and the Yukon. Each issue features a notable and interesting person in the field of law. With one short interview, Anne-Marie created for the cover a light-hearted portrait, which accurately captures the spirit of this person. This work earned for her a spot as finalist for best illustrator at the Western Magazine Awards.
